Microwave ablation (MWA) is a minimally invasive therapy for unresectable tumors in various organs, including liver, lung, thyroid, breast, kidney and uterus. With image guidance, a thin needle called a microwave ablation antenna is inserted into the tumor. The emitted microwave energy heats the tumor quickly.
When the temperature reaches up to 60°C, the tumor cells lead to death via coagulation necrosis. At the same time, it has minimal impact on normal surrounding organs. Compared with existing thermal ablation therapies, the benefits of microwave ablation include bigger ablation zones, faster ablation speed, and more approach options, including percutaneous, laparoscopic, bronchoscopic, and open surgical access.
